Closing Vents May Not Save Energy

Like most homeowners, you want to save money. One of the best ways to reduce your monthly bills is to reduce your monthly energy expenditure. If you want to ensure that you minimize your energy usage, do not buy into energy-saving myths. One myth about saving energy is to close the vents in the rooms that you don’t use.

In residential HVAC systems, the blower moves a certain amount of air through the ventilation, regardless of whether the vents are open or closed. When you close the vents, less air can be moved by the blower. When this happens, you reduce the efficiency of the system.

The more efficiently your HVAC works, the more money you’ll save month after month. Keep the vents open to ensure optimal efficiency.

Seal Gaps With Caulk

Protecting your home from low temperatures and pests means eliminating even the smallest cracks near main entry points. Start your home maintenance in March by examining the seals around doors, windows and vents in order to determine whether there are gaps that must be repaired. Other areas in your home that may require a bit of extra caulk include tiled floors and showers.

Once you have identified the problem areas, select an appropriate type of caulk. For most of your indoor needs, siliconized acrylic sealant will do the job. If you’re working in a bathroom, pure silicone may be a better bet. With a few quick touch-ups, you can keep your home free of unwanted moisture, pests and cold air. You may even find you save money on your next utility bill!

Refresh your outdoor living area with new outlets. As one of the most convenient electrical updates, outlets can improve the safety of your yard and offer convenient plug-in points for your lawn care equipment and outdoor entertainment. Enjoy an updated yard with the help of a professional electrician and new outlets placed in safe and accessible locations.

           Convenient Electrical Usage

Remove all those extension cords from your lawn and enjoy outlets placed where you need them most along your deck, patio or throughout your yard. Electrical lines can be buried by professional electricians, so you can enjoy electricity at any area of your lawn without the use of extension cords and other temporary options. Choose GFCI outlets to protect yourself and keep the party going with outdoor lighting, devices and more.

Energy Saving Myths - Turning Off Your Appliances

If saving money on your energy bill is the goal, then it’s important to dispel all of the energy-saving myths. One big myth about saving energy is that turning a device off will save on electricity costs. Here is what you need to know about turning your appliances off.

           Vampire Electricity Use

A lot of people believe that if they turn off their devices then they’ll save energy. What they don’t know about is vampire electricity use. Vampire electricity use is when a device is still plugged in but turned off, and the device continues to draw power.

The most common culprits of vampire electricity use are space heaters, TVs, coffeemakers and computers. You can still save energy, but consider unplugging the device or using a surge protector with an off switch.

Spring is the best season for upgrades! As winter melts away, it’s time to get ready for the warm season! As you prepare to enter into summer, you may want to take a quick look around your home. Spring is one of the best times to take care of any maintenance that you couldn’t get around to throughout the winter. This includes any electrical updates that you might have put off.

If you want to make repairs this spring, then take a walk around your home and create a list of necessary repairs. This list doesn’t have to be extensive at first. Simply write down any electrical upgrades or maintenance you think you may need. Then, you can make a game plan that will save you time and money on those repairs.

If you’re looking to upgrade your shower, there are several possible routes to the renovation—and, of course, it will depend upon your personal needs or preferences. Maybe you feel that it’s time to upgrade from a standard shower to a shower and tub combo. You could also work to improve the storage capabilities of your shower by creating new niches or shelves. If possible, you can even consider installing a window nearby; this can help to maximize light within your shower. How about adding a seat or a new door? However you decide to upgrade, happy renovating! For advice on shower renovations, contact us today.

As time goes by, the public is becoming progressively more conscious about how their lifestyle impacts the health and wellbeing of the planet. For this reason (and more), eco-friendly homes have become more common. However, just because the home you purchased wasn’t a “green” home, that doesn’t mean you can’t make some eco-friendly improvements. During construction, try to stick to sustainable materials local to your region. You could also install some brand-new energy-efficient appliances and/or solar panels and keep your HVAC system well-maintained and running as efficiently as possible. Be sure to get rid of your old lightbulbs and invest in some energy-efficient bulbs instead. Contact us for a guide on eco-friendly home improvement.

In today’s hyper-connected world, electronics are crucial for pretty much every type of home. What is unnecessary, however, is a tangled mess of cables in every room of your house. Take time to rethink all the piles of wires throughout your home. You could investigate simple cable management options like fasteners, USB charging stations, and Velcro strips to keep cords tidier. You can also use cable storage boxes that not only help you hide unsightly cords, but also provide additional physical protection for your surge protectors and extension boxes. For things like entertainment centers, it may be worth investigating hidden cord systems in your walls for permanent electronic fixtures in your home. Contact us for help keeping your electronics organized more safely and more attractively.

The Best Ways To Test Your Home for Radon

Radon gas can cause respiratory problems, so you want to make sure your home has as little radon as possible. An easy way to do this is to test your home’s radon level.

           Short-Term and Long-Term Testing

You should first try a short-term test. For best results, be sure to close your windows and outside doors 12 hours before starting the test. Keep them closed for the duration of the test.

If the short-term test results show a radon level of at least 4 pCi/L, you should then perform a second test. If you need immediate results, you can opt for another short-term test.

The EPA also recommends a second short-term test if the radon level is more than 8 pCi/L. Otherwise, conduct a long-term test to determine the average amount of radon in your home annually.

           Next Steps

With a mitigation system, you should be able to lower the radon level of your house to less than 2 pCi/L. The process is simple and affordable, and it will improve both your health and your peace of mind.

Many homeowners don’t realize their fans can change direction, much less the benefits this can deliver from season to season. Most fans have an easy switch that reverses the direction of the fan blades from clockwise to counterclockwise. The switch should be somewhere on the base of the fan.

Why is this important? You should change the direction of your fan twice a year—once in the summer and once in the winter. In the hot summertime, your fan should be spinning counterclockwise to blow cool air straight down. Keep the fan at a higher speed the hotter it is in the house.

During winter, you should then switch your fan’s direction to clockwise. A clockwise direction takes warm air from the ceiling area and pushes it down throughout the room. Switch the direction of your fan in the winter and keep it circulating at a low speed to disperse warm air.

Age is just a number, even when it comes to your house. Just like proper self-care can keep your body strong, good home maintenance can make your house last longer.

           Inspect the Roof

The roof is your home's shield. Keeping your shingles intact and your gutters clean helps protect your home from the elements.

           Check the Pipes

Look for loose or leaky pipes when you are cleaning. You can save money on your water bill by finding and fixing leaks when they're small.

           Install a Pump

If you have a basement, you may benefit from having a sump pump. It can get water out in a hurry if your basement floods during a rainstorm.

With a few simple home maintenance tips, you can enjoy your home for many more years.

Who Needs a Plumber Use Masking Tape

Over time as your home settles, vibrations and temperature changes can cause the joints of your pipes to loosen a bit and you may even see some leakage. Don’t panic, as this is common. And there is a solution that is easy, inexpensive, and likely sitting in your junk drawer - masking tape!

Shut off your water main and unscrew affected pipes at the joint. Dry the pipe and remove debris. Wrap the threads once with plain, ordinary masking tape. Screw the pipe back into place. Masking tape acts as a filler, enlarging the pipe just enough to create a tighter fit. Add another layer or partial layer if needed. Tighten down by hand or wrench. Aren’t you handy?

Shelf Brackets Make Great Bike Racks

Are you looking for a new bike storage solution? Shelf brackets intended to hold closet poles can actually work spectacularly as bike holders. These brackets usually consist of a triangular frame with a hook that extends outward. One of the best aspects of using these shelves for your bike is that they are small, light, and easy to move if you ever need to reconfigure your storage. They’re also available in many different colors, so you can create a fully customized bike rack.

Install the shelf brackets on the wall you want to use for storage, and make sure they have secure anchors. Try to screw them into the wall studs for the sturdiest hold. Once you install the shelves, you can attach felt strips to the hooks so they won’t scratch your bike when you put it in storage. Hook-and-loop strips will also work. Depending on how many bikes you want to store, you may be able to install a smaller second set of hooks below the first one for a child’s bike or smaller bike.

Problems If you notice any early warning signs of a plumbing problem in your home, you need to have them addressed immediately to prevent burst pipes, flooding, and other expensive water damage. Some of the most commonly reported telltale signs of plumbing problems include toilets that gurgle after flushing, sputtering faucets, and slow drainage in sinks and bathtubs. If you notice the smell of stagnant water in the lower floors of your home, or if you see wet spots appear on walls or ceilings, it’s vital to contact a professional as soon as possible to mitigate water damage to your home. The earlier you catch a plumbing problem, the better your chances will be of fixing it completely as soon as possible.

Is Your Home Properly Grounded

You’ve heard the sage advice to “keep grounded,” right? Well that goes for your house as well as for you. It’s shocking to realize how many homes are not properly grounded. It’s a good bet that much of this problem ties back to amateur electricians or under trained appliance installers. Some of the rest may involve failed or faulty equipment.

With a faulty ground, everything in a home that runs on electricity becomes dangerous. You have a much higher risk of being shocked. There may also be problems with the lights dimming and appliances working properly. A properly grounded system does not usually have these problems.

It might be a good idea to ask a licensed electrician to give your home an electrical health-check. You never know what might turn up.

A leaky faucet can seem like such a tiny thing, but fixing those drips can provide major benefits for your wallet and your sanity. Getting rid of nighttime leaks can help you fall asleep more quickly and enjoy a relaxing night’s sleep. At the same time, you can literally save hundreds of dollars on your annual water bill. All of that for taking care of a little leak? Yes, please!

How To Fix a Leaking Faucet

You don’t need to call a plumber for this super-easy home maintenance project. Dripping faucets are the epitome of a quick fix. Many homeowners can tackle this task in 20-30 minutes.

First, check the handle for leaks by taking off the handle and tightening the packing nut. All you need is a wrench for this part. If there’s still a leak, the next step is to replace the seal underneath the stem assembly. Shut off the water for a minute and unscrew the assembly. Once you’ve changed the washer and put things back together, turn the water on again.

Stay Alert: Monitoring Galvanized Water Pipes

Water supply piping is what brings water to our homes from the main supply in the street. There are multiple types of water supply piping materials, including plastic, copper, lead and galvanized. The last two are the ones you want to watch out for.

Identify your water supply piping material by looking at the water pipes where they enter your home before the first shutoff valve. Depending on the home, they are often found in the basement. If the pipe has a threaded fitting or is showing signs of rust, you should have your water inspected as soon as possible.

Check The Chimney

One big selling feature of a home can be a gorgeous fireplace that acts as a focal point in the room. From cozy winter nights to large family gatherings, around the fireplace can be a common place to gather. But even if you fall in love with the fireplace, make sure you (or likely your inspector) check out the chimney.

A thorough investigation of the chimney can lead to helpful insight into the home’s condition. Make sure the chimney itself is in good shape. Are the bricks or stones in place or are they crumbling? Is the roof area around the chimney solid or does it show signs of wear? Let the home inspector do the leg work and then act based on his or her report.

Chimney repairs are often negotiated during the sale and can help you negotiate a better price.

Building a Proper Fire

One aspect of easy home maintenance is building a fire in the fireplace - a luxury today, where it was a necessity in the past. When you're building your fire, make sure that the chimney flue is open to ensure airflow in your unit. Next, stack your logs on top of the metal holder, adding things such as crumpled newspaper and a few sticks for kindling. You can either light it with a long match or one of those super-long lighters for barbecues and candles.

A roaring fire is cozy and makes the cold nights seem a little less frigid during the winter months. Enjoy your fireplace to its fullest extent; just remember to use safety precautions and make sure the fire is fully extinguished before bedtime.

Lung cancer risk increases for both children and adults who are exposed to radon in the home. However, most people are exposed to small levels of environmental radon without consequence. Unfortunately, children usually consume higher levels of radon than adults in the same household.

Radon is a toxic gas that sticks close to the floor of the home. This means that the smallest children, who are also closest to the floor, are directly breathing the radon. Because children have a higher respiratory rate than adults, they are also taking in a higher volume of the poisoned air in the environment.

Although radon is dangerous, it's also odorless and colorless, so most people don't even realize that exposure is happening. Keep your family save by having your home's radon levels checked by a certified and experienced air quality professional.

           Preventing Leaks

There's an easy way to keep your water heater from leaking: At least once a year, grab a large bucket, attach a hose to the drain and empty the tank. Then, simply allow the unit to refill. This process prevents sediment from building up in the appliance. This east maintenance will help the heater last longer and continue to function well.

           The Results

Sediment buildup can cause the water heater's heating elements to fail, so keeping it free of mineral deposits is critical to its health. Paying attention to this home maintenance tip will save you money on your monthly energy bill, and by keeping your water heater clean and well maintained, you won't have to pay a professional for tune-up jobs and repairs.

3 Situations Where You Can Get by With Repairing Your Roof

All roofs will experience wear and tear over time, but that does not necessarily mean you need to dish out money for installing a brand new roof. If the following situations apply to you, a simple repair will likely do the trick.

            1. You Have a Couple of Missing Shingles

Replacing a few missing or curling shingles is easy to do. You can easily extend your roof’s life and address this issue by replacing shingles if the damage is localized in one section and not widespread.

            2. Your Roof Is Young

If you have a relatively new roof, it is worth putting money into repairing it. On the other hand, it is a much better investment to replace an old roof.

           3. There Is a Small Leak

Although a leak might seem serious, a contractor can easily patch up small leaks before they become a much larger issue.

The Truth About Your Roof's Life Expectancy

Nothing in this world truly lasts forever, not even your roof! While this may not come as a surprise, it is important you are aware of how long your home’s roof is expected to last. Although the average life expectancy of a roof is between 20 and 25 years, there are several factors that affect how long your roof will last before needing to be replaced:

The quality of the materials used to form your roof

What weather conditions your roof is exposed to

How often you perform maintenance on your roof

How well your roof was initially installed

If you aren’t sure whether you should repair or replace your roof, you should consider these factors to determine whether fixing the issue will add significant time to your roof’s lifespan or if it is best to invest in a new roof.

Just by nature of their use, a sink drain can become fully or partially clogged, creating a frustrating nuisance. Before you call the plumber, give this homemade drain cleaner a try. It’s simple, the ingredients are on hand and it’s pocketbook–friendly.

Begin by pouring boiling water into the drain and follow immediately with a half cup of baking soda, allowing it to sit for 5 - 6 minutes. The next step sounds like a grade school experiment but if you’ve got to do this stuff, you may as well enjoy it, right? Pour a cup of white vinegar into the drain and watch the fizz as it reacts with the baking soda. After 5 more minutes follow with another flush of boiling water.

So much of your daily routine requires electricity, from cooking breakfast to watching your favorite television show after dinner. Having a backup generator ensures that your daily life is minimally impacted by blackouts and outages caused by storms and natural disasters. Generators offer peace of mind and remove stress and anxiety during an outage. They can power your house for several days so you won’t waste time or energy worrying about when the power will return.

Generators deliver power quickly, keeping it flowing without interruption. Your electronic appliances will continue to operate, including televisions, computers and refrigerators. In addition, your heating and cooling systems will continue to work, so you won’t have to worry about physical comfort through snowy winters and scorching summers. Installing a generator is a great way to prepare for the unexpected.

Direct Water Away From Your Home

Home maintenance doesn’t have to be expensive, and when you put these home maintenance tips to use, it won’t be. One simple yet crucial chore you should tackle this weekend involves extending your downspouts, so they direct water away from the base of your home and not to it.

Factory downspouts end at the foundation of your home, which is actually very poor designing. The very point of your gutter system is to keep water from pooling on your roof or damaging your home’s foundation. So, unless you keep a barrel at the end of your spouts, buy extension pieces to direct water at least two to three feet away from the base of your house. This 10-minute task and a few bucks can save you thousands of dollars and months’ worth of hassle in the future.

Creating the “perfect” home interior design depends on many factors, such as the layout of your home, your regional weather, and the amount of sunlight that reaches your property. If you want to create an interior look that flows through the seasons, startby choosing neutral colors and earth tones for the larger surfaces of your home’s interior. You can update furniture covers and other decorative items throughout the rooms of your home as the seasons change to create new and interesting seasonal décor. The neutral tones you choose for your walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces can work very well with a wide range of décor themes and color palettes. Ask us about how you can update your home interior effectively.

Switch Ceiling Fan Direction in Winter

It’s a good bet that much of this problem ties back to amateur electricians or undertrained appliance installers.

Consider a GFCI Protector

A GFCI or ground fault circuit interrupter is one of the greatest advancements in electrical safety in the past four decades. These are the outlets you often come across in areas of the house where moisture poses a risk. Some common areas include:

            • Bathrooms

            • Kitchens

            • Unfinished basements

           Use the GFCI Protector Outdoors

As rain, snow and humidity present a problem for outdoor receptacles, it is also ideal for outdoor installation. This helps to ensure that your lights and anything else you plug outdoors, such as stereo systems or the car vacuum, is safe from interference from moisture.

GFCI protection is one of the best investments you can make to protect your outdoor outlets from moisture.

Ceiling Repair Process

Why Look at the Ceiling First

When you discover water in your home, you've got a big job on your hands with water damage repair. You should begin the cleanup effort with the ceiling. When water builds up here, it can cause sagging and eventually burst and collapse. Prompt repair can help you avoid injuries and extensive cleaning.

            Doing the Job

You should start by first identifying the wet boards and panels. Remove these and replace them as soon as possible. You'll also want to find out how water made its way to the ceiling. The roof could be the culprit, so inspect this area and make the necessary repairs. You may want to call a professional to inspect your roof and check for additional damage to the rafters.

How Your Chimney Can Reduce Electricity Costs

If an energy efficient living room is your goal, there are tips that can put this goal within reach. One of these tips includes paying closer attention to your fireplace. If the fireplace isn’t in use, then you should make sure that the flue damper is closed. This will keep all of your heated or cooled air inside your home.

Your chimney works because of the difference between outdoor and indoor temperatures. The updraft draws smoke out of your home and into the outside air. However, even when you don’t have the fireplace going, it can take your home’s air and push it outside. If you have an inflatable chimney plug, you can save money on heating and cooling because it seals it off when not in use.

Preparing for a Home Inspection

The perfect home simply doesn't exist. Why? Well, in a brand new home, the contractor often is not aware of shortcuts taken by his subcontractors, and government building and code inspectors do not have the time or the budget to inspect everything in every home, so most government inspectors simply do a spot-check of homes in new subdivisions. A home that has been lived in usually has damage that occurred from simply living in it, or additions or remodeling that weren't permitted. That's why buyers need a professional home inspection.

The purpose of a home inspection is to document the overall condition of the property at the time of the inspection and to ensure that its major systems and components (water heater, heating and cooling, plumbing, electrical, etc.) are installed properly and working properly. The home inspection is not a warranty since the home inspector is only there for a couple of hours and never saw the home or its systems being built, so he has no idea about any quality control processes. While some items identified during the course of a home inspection might seem like minor items individually, collectively they could add up to major headaches involving both time and money. If sellers know what to look for, they can resolve many minor items before the buyer's home inspection.

Cleaning a drain is an easy home maintenance tip everyone should know. In fact, you can do this with only one tool and a little time. You do not need any expensive drain cleaners to remove a clog. Drain cleaners can miss things and cause unwanted wear and tear on the pipes, which makes the drain snake a great alternative.

In a few seconds, you can wiggle a barbed drain snake down the pipe and pull up the clog. With a few additional inserts and pullouts, the drain snake can remove all the hair and other debris clogging the pipe. Once finished, turn on the water and watch it smoothly flow down the drain. The whole process takes only a few dollars and minimal effort to accomplish
